The transition zone is characterized by a reduced number of the trees and shrubs which are typical of the arid zone and the presence of lichens and perennial herbs. The soils in this are deeper than in the arid zone and the rainfall is higher. Most of the agricultural areas occur in the transition zone, with cattle grazing being the dominant form of land use. Many of the landbirds occur in this zone, as do Galapagos (or Giant) tortoises.
